A reader has shared a Facebook post by Putih Merah Hitam about a rude and unforgiving PRC Certis Cisco warden who gave him a parking summons for not displaying a parking coupon. He says that despite being just beside his vehicle when the officer was issuing the summon, the officer refused to acknowledge his presence and did not even bother to listen to his explanation. In the end, the officer told him that "If you are good to me, I don't summon you... If you are bad I summon you."

Read his account here.

SECURITY GUARDS: LOW PAY, LONG HOURS?

$
0
0

I refer to the article “Security officers get more career paths” (Straits Times, Dec 4).

Shortage of security guards

It states that ”"We have to be more creative, we have to reclaim jobs,” said Mr Tan, adding that the industry, which comprises about 75,000 licensed guards, is still short of around 10,000 to 15,000 people.”

Not addressing the root problems?

These new initiatives as well as those in the past few years do not seem to be very effective, because we may not be addressing the root causes vigorously.

Low pay?

The basic salary is still very low – $857  according to the Ministry of Man power’s wages benchmarking tool.

According to Payscale — the median hourly pay is only $7.50.

Long working hours?

As to ”Senior operations manager Jason Chua, 57, of CBM Security said most security officers work 12-hour shifts with only one day off. “Our working hours are very long. We always lack sleep or proper rest, which can really affect our health,” he said, adding that the programme will help him monitor his high blood pressure” – we need to change the typical very long working hours.

LIFE BEING AN EDUCATED MALAY MINORITY IN SINGAPORE

<Facebook post on I'm Not Racist, But>

I am a local university student who happens to be Malay. When i was in school, my chinese cliques would often ask me if I'm truly Malay. This is because I've been consistently on the Deans list and this to them is pretty unheard of.

During a taxi ride conversation once, I was met with absolute surprise when i mentioned about my desire to do a PhD upon graduation. The taxi driver asked me if I'm truly malay and whether my family would support this given that "most Malays like to marry young".

When I once told my friends that two of my siblings are also doing PhD, I was met with this reply, "wah your family different one ah cos most Malays their education not so good".

Such is life for a minority in Singapore.

WOMAN CALLS POLICE ON MAN SHE MET VIA BEETALK FOR PASSING HER STDS

$

What began as a brief encounter has now turned into a nightmare for Miss Chua, a 41 year-old sales manager.

A week ago, Miss Chua met a younger 31 year-old man on messaging app BeeTalk. The two had been chatting via the online app for a few days, but eventually ended up meeting and exchanging "body fluids" orally.

But things went awry when Miss Chua, a divorcee with an 18 year-old daughter, found out from her friend that the man she had met could be a carrying a venereal disease.

According to the friend, who is a carrier of the Herpes Type 2 disease, she had met the same man over the messaging app and had protected sex with the man. She says that the man had told her that he was infected with the Herpes Type 1 disease. Miss Chua however, was unaware that the man was infected when they became intimate.

Frightened and alarmed, Miss Chua called the police to bring the man into questioning for willfully transmitting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) despite knowing that he was a carrier. When approached by reporters, the man denied that he has Herpes Type I.

According to Miss Chua, she first got to know the man, who works as a paramedic, through the online app some time ago. She claims she saw the relationship as a way to ease her boredom in her free time and had no intention to meet. However, the man wanted more from the relationship and subsequently turned up at her doorstep under the pretext of giving her pet dog some milk treats.

When the two met last Thursday, he gave her the milk treats and started behaving intimately with her. He then took out a condom and propositioned her, causing Miss Chua to reject him angrily. He left her home at 2AM the next day.

Although Miss Chua felt that that would be the last encounter she would have with the man, she later found out about the man's STD from her friend when they both realized that they had spoken to the same paramedic.

Miss Chua has since sent herself for STD checks at a hospital, but doctors have warned that results would not be accurate until at least 6 months from her intimate encounter.

Speaking about her ordeal, Miss Chua told reporters that she now fears making contact with her 18 year-old daughter, her friends and family. She says that she now uses separate utensils and cutlery from her daughter when having their meals together.

When contacted, the paramedic at the center of this drama said that he too has gone for a STD check, and furnished a test result slip, which showed that he tested negative for HIV but positive for Herpes Type 1.

Under the law, only carriers of HIV are required to notify the other party of their status prior to intimacy.

FILIPINO FOREIGN TALENT CLAIMS CHRISTIANS CANNOT EAT HALAL FOOD?

Hello All Singapore Stuff Editors,

On a forum http://goo.gl/FzxtC1 , I see a post about a filipino foreign talent comment on the Singapore Carls Junior facebook page. He ask a really funny question on whether the burger was halal and nxt said that as christian he cannot eat halal food.

I wonder how true is this teaching? Are christians forbidden to eat food that was prayed or blessed by other religions?

In singapore, we are multi-racial and multi religious so I have never heard my christian friends tell me such restrictions on them before. Most of the time, they accommodate to my halal requirements and we go halal food places to makan without any problem. I hope such good sensitivity will continue and foreigners will take the effort to learn our harmony practices to maintain good relationships.

With more foreigners coming into singapore, I hope more sense will be put to this topic. Hoping this is not true or it be harder for friends to eat together nxt times.

SPARE KOVAN DOUBLE MURDER EX-COP ISKANDAR RAHMAT FROM THE DEATH PENALTY

$

Dear ASS Editors,

I am disappointed with the death penalty ruling against disgraced policeman Iskandar Rahmat who was found guilty of murdering two men. The death penalty is not going to solve the problem, it is not going to bring back the dead but add to the body count.

http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/policeman-sentenced-death-kovan...

It is a primitive form of punishment that has no scientific evidence for deterrence. It is but an archaic form of punishment that follows the draconian principle of An eye for an eye.

This point is clearly explained by prominent Anti-Death Penalty activist Kirsten Han. She said:

"So many people are punished by the death penalty, from the family members who have to go through the anguish of counting down the days to prison wardens who have to deal with the reality of the execution—and all for a form of retributive justice that has no proven deterrent* and certainly no rehabilitative effect."

This is not the kind of solution we want for a democratic country which respects human rights. We are better than that. Iskandar Rahmat should be spared the gallows and spend the rest of his life reflecting on his actions in prison. He should not have to pay for the ultimate price because of his one grave mistake. We should be a nation about compassion and not partake in endless cycles of violence.

Remember, he was an exemplary policeman until his money problems forced him onto this regrettable path. Circumstances have led him to such a sorry state and his past performance show he is capable of being a decent human being.

Do we want to solve violent crimes with violence itself? Is this the moral way? Does this solve anything? Does this reform the criminal? No it does not.

I urge the authorities to relook the death penalty and spare Iskandar Rahmat the noose. Giving him life imprisonment is the best punishment and reformative action for him.

According to a Friday post on PM Lee Hsien Loong's Facebook page, the Lee family will be donating half of the value of their father's home on 38 Oxley Road to charities specified in the late Lee Kuan Yew's obituary.

The statement on PM Lee's Facebook reads:

My siblings, Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang, and I have issued the following joint statement:

"To honour the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Lee Hsien Loong and Mr Lee Hsien Yang have each agreed to donate half the value of 38 Oxley Road to the charities named in the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew's obituary notice.

Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang would like to honour the wish of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew that the house at 38 Oxley Road be demolished after Dr Lee Wei Ling ceases to live in it.

Mr Lee Hsien Loong has recused himself from all government decisions involving 38 Oxley Road and, in his personal capacity, would also like to see this wish honoured.

Speaking as the children of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang hope the government will allow the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew's wish for the demolition of the house to be honoured and that all Singaporeans will support their cause."

JUSUF KALLA: WE WANT TO MANAGE OUR OWN AIRSPACE, S'PORE HAS NO RIGHTS OVER IT

$
0
0

Indonesia wants to reclaim airspace controlled by Singapore within 5 years, according to an ambitious plan by President Joko Widodo, who in recent weeks has been showing off a more muscular foreign policy in the region.

Airspace over the Riau and Natuna islands near Singapore has been under the control of Singapore since 1946. It also serves as the corridor for flights in and out of Changi Airport, one of Asia's busiest international flight paths.

In recent media reports, CNN had erroneously reported that Singapore was willing to cede the airspace to Indonesia, but Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has since rubbished such claims online.

According to DPM Teo, Indonesia's push to reclaim the airspace should be dependent on whether Indonesia can provide effective air traffic control services, stating that sovereignty has not been an issue for years.

“Of course it’s related to sovereignty,” Indonesia Vice President Jusuf Kalla said in an interview on Tuesday in Jakarta. “They have no right to decline, it is Indonesia’s right.”

The stance reflects Indonesia’s efforts to step up control of the borders of the world’s largest archipelago, which stretches from maritime boundaries with India in the west to Australia in the east. Widodo’s government has developed the coast guard, blown up illegal fishing vessels and deployed warships in the gas-rich waters around Natuna in response to China’s growing military presence in the disputed South China Sea.

Widodo's more aggressive foreign policy may stem from his move to shore up political support from the army, with key appointments in the government being given to ex-army men such as government security chief Luhut Panjaitan. The Indonesian government has also signaled a move away from his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's "a million friends and zero enemies" approach.

“The Indonesian air force wants to control their own space,” said Wisnu Darjono, a director at the state air navigation agency. Singapore took control when Indonesia lacked the ability “but now our facilities are almost equal with Singapore. We are ready to control that area.”

Indonesia informed Singapore of its intentions during a visit to Jakarta last month by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean. The administration of the so-called Flight Information Region is a complex issue under the ambit of the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations agency, Teo told Indonesia’s foreign minister Retno Marsudi during the visit, according to Singapore’s foreign ministry.

“There are many instances where the territorial airspace of a country is managed by the air traffic authorities in another,” the ministry said on its website. “Indonesia also provides air traffic services in airspace which belongs to other countries.”

However, Indonesia has still been struggling to regulate its aviation sector after a spate of accidents, including at least three deadly crashes this year and last December’s crash of an AirAsia Bhd. plane carrying 162 people.

“The airspace issue is the last thing that Indonesia should be worried about,” said Paul Rowland, an independent Jakarta-based political consultant. “It is not a sovereignty issue, but about technical capacity. It is not going to be solved by a war of words. Indonesia already has a shortage of controllers without taking on additional airspace.”

S'PORE HAS 2ND HIGHEST NUMBER OF JAILBIRDS PER 100,000 PEOPLE?

$

I refer to the article “Silent screams” (The Economist, Dec 3).

S’pore2nd highest inmates per 100,000 population?

The chart shows that Singapore, at about 250, is the second highest out of nine countries for “inmates per 100,000 population, 2013″.

According to the Singapore Prisons Service release of statistics on 23 January 2015 – the Total Convicted Penal Admissions for Y2014 was 11,595.

The Total Convicted Penal Population for Y2014 was 9,754.

The Total Convicted Penal Releases for Y2014 was 11,955.

No. released about the same as no. admitted per year?

On the average there were about 12,500 Admissions per year in the last three years, and about 12,500 Releases.

Does it mean that the number admitted is about the same as those released per year?

How many ex-offenders?

How many ex-offenders in total are there?

The recidivism rate has increased from 23.6 per cent for the Release Cohort 2010 to 27.6 per cent for 2012.

What are your thoughts on the above statistics?

(Note: The Drug Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) inmates population was 1,400 in Y2014, Releases was 1,350 and Admissions was 1,139.)

From a leaked Thai police confidential document, police said that 10 Syrians linked to the Islamic State terror group had entered Thailand to attack Russian interests. This was based on information from Russia's Federal Security Service.

Thai police urged the stepping up of security around possible Russian targets. This comes after an ISIS affiliate claimed responsibility for bombing a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula in October. 224 people were killed in the bomb attack.

Thailand's police Special Branch revealed that 4 suspects went to Pattaya, 2 headed to Phuket while the destination for the remaining 2 suspects was unknown. Thawip Netniyom, the National Security Council Chief General has told all security units to remain vigilant and assured the public that "everything is safe, rest assured".

NANYANG KINDERGARTEN FAILS TO PROTECT CHILD FROM BULLYING, TELLS PARENT TO WITHDRAW FROM SCHOOL FOR SPEAKING UP

$
0
0

We have received an email from an unhappy parent who says that her child was bullied while attending Nanyang Kindergarten. According to this parent, the educators at the school did not act to protect the child and even allowed the bullies to get away with their misdeeds. Our reader also says that the school's staff made unwarranted comments about their non-Chinese home "environment" and eventually forced all her children to leave the school after she spoke out against the school board.

Is this the type of education we want to give children these days? What do you think?

Read her account here.

We braved ourselves to queue in Nanyang Kindergarten to holistically optimise our daughter’s ability of a well-balanced student. Sadly, this was not the case. Our daughter was in her final year, having spent four years with the kindergarten – where words cannot put in place the absolute disappointment we have in this school. This kindergarten lacks the ability to develop and nurture students with its average curriculum. More importantly, as we have always instilled good values for our daughter, Nanyang’s approach was different.

Firstly, instead of disciplining misbehaving students for playing with our daughter’s snack, the school isolated our daughter with orange traffic cones in a cordoned-off corner of the assembly hall and told the children to stay away from her. At age 4 that time, our daughter distinctively remembered how she was put in a disturbing space in the assembly hall where she drew a picture of herself to explain to us what happened that day.

Secondly, instead of managing an incident after our daughter was punched by her classmate, the school left it to the children’s domestic helpers to handle the situation as opposed to educating both 6 year olds about the wrongdoing.

Recently, on how Nanyang Kindergarten made a comment about our “environment”. Being non-Chinese, we instilled a strong interest and love for the Mandarin language. It is disheartening to know that our so-called “environment” has been picked on as well. It is entirely inappropriate and unacceptable.

We always believe that the combined effort and communication of parents and educators fully benefit and make a significant difference for both children and the school. In fact, we have also supported Nanyang towards the development of their second campus. However, on 5 October 2015 the Board called us for a meeting and we were surprised on how the meeting was conducted, a one-sided affair. The Board told us they did not like parents like us and asked us to take out our children.

This was Nanyang’s solution and yes, our children, aged 6 and 3 were out of school. It was better for the school to take this action as they know that there are other parents in the queue to send their children to their school. It has always been the Nanyang's brand and stakeholders' interest and NOT for the children's interests.

Our children have done nothing wrong to this school. They did not harm anyone nor cause conflict. They participated in all lessons, joined all school activities and even showed appreciation to all school teachers and staff (aunties and guards included) for the non-obligatory gift-giving during Chinese New Year, Mooncake Festival, Teachers' Day and Christmas Day every year since 2012. We had to explain to our two children that they could not attend in the school's Children's Day celebration and they could not attend any school field trips or year-end camps. We also had to explain to our Nursery 1 mei-mei, who was not even part of any issues raised, that she cannot see her friends anymore. More importantly, to our Kindergarten 2 jie-jie, who spent all of her 4 years in this school that she won't be able to participate in the school graduation in few weeks’ time. For the school to abruptly take away their everyday school lives, their friends and to face another challenges of new school and new friends, they are ONLY 6 and 3 years old!

We believe that it was extremely brutal actions and inhumane as EDUCATORS. We do not understand what kind of a society is this. One end lives in a bubble where the whole society thinks highly of them. The other end is us - trying to whisper and voice out. We did but it was wrong and will always be wrong. Nanyang Kindergarten did not like parents like us and asked us to take out our children. We were the first and only parents who dared open our mouths and yes, to Nanyang's 100 year tradition as mentioned by the Board during the meeting. We are now picking up the pieces from what this school has done to our children. Our children's education is important but their well-being is far more superior.

UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE WITH UNPROFESSIONAL HR RECRUITERS FROM RECRUIT EXPRESS

$

0

Hi,

I am writing this on the behalf of a friend to protect his privacy.

My friend Jonas is a student that is currently on holiday so he is looking for a job. He saw a few ads online last night and decided to message a person regarding a one month position. The person replied this morning and they arranged an interview around 1pm today at the CFP Building at Bishan. The building name is misleading because it turns out to be Recruit Express. He arrived at 1pm sharp and messaged the person of his arrival. She didn't reply. So someone gave him a form to fill up and he waited there with a few other candidates.

During the 45mins that he was waiting, he noticed the behaviour of the recruiters that were very unprofessional. They were laughing out loud among themselves, talking loudly and swearing! All this scene happened in front of the candidates and when one recruiter realised that, he told the candidates to wait in another room that was enclosed so they couldn't hear them. My friend Jonas was kinda pissed at that time so he walked off.

About an hour later, the person he was supposed to meet messaged him asking where he is so he told her he went away. Basically, that lady was all along in the office, joking around with her colleges instead of doing her job as a recruiter. When Jonas told her he went away, he was expecting at least a common courtesy of that lady to say "sorry for making you come down and wait" but what he got was "are you coming back later". At that point, he didn't respond because he understood Recruit Express was an inefficient and useless agency. The problem right here is not about how long he waited but about how these "recruiters" treated my friend and the other candidates in an very unprofessional way.

I hope this article reaches the management of Recruit Express Bishan as I couldn't find any contact on their website.

Thank you for reading and to all the job seekers, don't waste your time on Recruit Express.

PAP FORCES LIFT UPGRADING BY SHAMING RESIDENTS?

$
0
0
Dear All Singapore Stuff editors,

Please refer to the attached screenshots taken from hardwarezone forum. PAP shames residents on Facebook for not voting for the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP). They exposed the block address and indicated that it is the residents on the uppermost floor who are most uncooperative. Then they tried to use emotional blackmail, implying that the residents don't care for the elderly. Ended off the rant by saying that the MP is feeling frustrated with the residents. In the next facebook post, they said that one block will need "divine intervention" before the residents get their lifts upgraded.

Maybe PAP should subsidize the Lift Upgrading Programme so residents won't have to pay so much?

It is fair to say that residents shouldn't have to pay so much since it's HDB's fault in the first place. The PAP government always says they have the foresight, so why didn't they foresee that they will need lifts at every floor?

'If only they think of the needs of the elderly....' Sounds very noble.

Now that the oversight has occurred, they just blame residents for being selfish and not concerned about the elderly. But why didn't PAP think of the needs of the elderly at the very beginning? If this MP cares so much about the elderly, I'm sure his MP salary is more than enough to pay for the upgrading of the lifts. If he is truly concerned about the elderly, he would not be using emotional blackmail to force the residents to vote for the LUP when they are mostly unable to afford it.

As many residents have said, they are young and able to cope without the upgraded lift, so they really do not see the need of paying additional costs that do not benefit themselves. All the reasons given by the residents were reasonable and are worth considering. The cost should also be divided equally among all units and not differentiated by flat size. Stay 4 room flat means take lift more often than 3 room flat ppl ah?

Those residents did not opt for the LUPprogramme for the lifts upgrading as they have to fork out additional money (either in the form of cold hard cash/CPF) for it. Does the MP not know that some of his residents in those blocks may have financial difficulties and that is why they are reluctant to accept the LUP?

It is a democracy, so please respect their votes. What is the point of conducting voting for LUP when PAP is going to conduct a revote when they don't get their desired outcome? It's a choice that is no choice at all!

Perhaps the MP needs to wake up and realize that he is no longer a discipline master in a secondary school. He is a public servant and should respect the voters' decision. Where is the humility and respect for differing views? Shaming his own residents and exposing them to the risk of harassment by their neighbours is a low blow.

HDB TO DIVORCED MOTHER: GET MARRIED AGAIN TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR FLAT

$

0

My friend, a twice divorcee, actually wanted to apply for a HDB with her son.

She is currently residing also in HDB and too costly to maintain.

She check with HDB of her eligibility to purchase BTO, and it is yes.

She managed to got a queue and have paid the first deposit of S$2000.00, and went to lot of other places to obtain all required document that HDB requested.

she then called HDB to check on her eligibilities to obtain HDB loan instead of Bank loan.

Best joke of the day, HDB officer provided her two solutions.

1. to have 100K of saving, proofing to HDB and HDB will provide a loan amount of 26K to 55K.
If my friend has 100K of saving, I doubt she needs to loan!

2. to get married again to get HDB loan.
Make me suspect those fake marriage case could also be a guideline from HDB.

Hopes went down the drain!

HDB called her to inform her that actually SHE IS NOT ELIGIBLE to buy a BTO, and that it is their error and that HDB is sorry and will return her the down payment of S$2K!

Again the HDB officer reminded her "you can married again to get the BTO", this is so upsetting.

For HDB it is pretty easy, a sorry and to my friend it is a experience that guess she will never forget.

Do not quite understand how can HDB only notice she is not eligible after so many round of conversation and so many times of her visit to HDB.

For HDB it is pretty easy, just inform the applicant of the error, return them the 2K deposit and that's that.

So been only a commoner, we have to accepts and forgive and forgo all error done by the government department and just keep quiet and let life carry on with so much of resentment in them.

I am equally shock wth my friend incident and do hope should any one of those who read this, they have better get double or better triple confirmation if their application goes through and also make the officer write the name.

Am pretty depressed to hear this.

Dr Lee Bee Wah, i have thought government have mentioned that HDB will be made affordable for all Singaporean!

I think residing in HDB is a path for single and/or one time divorcee.

This is so sad and am really badly disturbed with the way HDB handle this matter.

Does us been a common Singaporean have to get adapt to all sort of biased treatment from government bodies?

PRIVILEGED PEOPLE, STOP LOOKING DOWN ON PEOPLE ASKING FOR WELFARE!

These are just some of the disgusting comments made on this post by MSF Singapore https://www.facebook.com/MSFSingapore/posts/1087165241316593

I am not going to talk about the video recording. What bugs me is the fucked up self righteous ignorant comments made. Singaporeans have been so brainwashed that "welfare" is a bad thing that they instantly believe that anyone seeking welfare must be lazy and just out to steal taxpayers monies.

Look WELFARE IS A THING. As much as the Singapore rhetoric tells us it's a bad thing, welfare is something every society needs to function, even our unique asian valued Singaporean society.

What really disgust me is all these privileged people who most likely never had to worry about being able to go to school, being judged based on skin colour(it fucking happens if you are Chinese DON'T try to argue me on this point)Not having enough options till you have to resort to crime. There are people in singapore who do not enjoy the same amount of privilege as you, there are poor people here, there are people who have to worry about their next meals.

Its not your fault that these things happened to these people, BUT you are have a little more empathy and NOT BE ASSHOLES TO THEM.

Just look at the comments, is this the cold uncaring singapore you want? Also to the people in the pictures shame on you.

STOP FOLLOWING FALSE PROPHETS WHO USE RELIGION TO FILL THEIR OWN POCKETS

$

<Facebook post by Michael Han>

Two news for me collided this morning. Both are about religion. The first one is the strangest. A respected senior consultant, Tham, 43, did the unthinkable. Here is what was reported: “She claimed that he (her father, the senior Dr Tham) owed God $150,000 and told him to give her the money so she could return it. When he refused, she took out an 18cm-long knife and held it to his neck. She told him to give her a cheque for $150,000 or follow her to the bank to withdraw the money…Tham forced her father onto a chair and held his neck in an armlock. He was struggling and trying to free himself when another staff member came and took away her knife. Tham then bit the victim’s left forearm.”

The whole saga began in mid-2013 when Tham’s father “stopped going to church and stopped his monthly contributions.” Tham “felt that her father’s reneging on his pledge was wrong and stepped in to assist. She took a bank loan and paid the church eight months of contributions totaling $27,700. She took on extra duties at work to pay this off.” She even forged her father’s signature on a cheque for $28,030.

She was diagnosed with mental illness after the incident. The IMH psychiatrist said, “Her actions appear to have been driven by psychotic experiences related to her religious or spiritual beliefs, which made her believe that her actions were morally correct.”

Tham was due to be sentenced by the Judge at a later date but the Judge had previously granted her permission to attend an overseas conference as an expert speaker.
The second news is an old and rather predictable one. The prosecution has filed their appeal in the City Harvest saga. They are of the view that the sentences are “manifestly inadequate.” This somehow caused a knee-jerked chain-reaction from Kong Hee (and others) when he remarked, “Whilst I respect the court’s decision, there are points which appear to be erroneous and warrant appeal.”

So, Kong Hee, and others, confirmed that they too will appeal. Kong Hee is appealing against both conviction and sentence. In his Facebook post, he said “the road ahead was long and arduous but asked church members to pray for a favourable outcome.”

Lesson? Only one. A deeply lamentable one.

I think no one on earth and/or in heaven would be more gobsmacked now than God himself. Not that anything surprises Him anymore. He is God after all. While Kong Hee – who is guilty beyond all reasonable doubt - is asking Him for a favourable outcome, Tham is driven in His name to perform the unthinkable.

Needless to say, the first news about a father and his daughter is the most heartbreaking. Without doubt intelligent, these words of the IMH psychiatrist describing Tham is most haunting to me: “Her actions appear to have been driven by psychotic experiences related to her religious or spiritual beliefs, which made her believe that her actions were morally correct.”

I believe this is what the wrong religious indoctrination can do to a person, and no one is spared – no matter how intelligent he or she is. This is also where my personal rant against mega-churches and their mindless drive for growth-at-all-costs becomes a little more biting, if not already painfully ironic.

First off, God has nothing whatsoever to do with it. That has to be said. It has to be let out with a jericho chant. God doesn't need money; not a cent. Instead, those who claim that they are collecting in His name are the ones who desperately need money; every cent of it.

Secondly, I sincerely believe that some churches have lost their way. Just my view of course. Instead of becoming more Christ-like, they are becoming more Christ-lite (easy on the Cross, hard on getting prosperous). Instead of giving more, they are taking more (some churches, much more). Instead of sacrificing for their sheep, the sheep are sacrificing for them (so that they can be adulated on their enthroned pedestal and live the high life that their members can never attain).

You see, they may promise their members prosperity evermore but it is just a means to their own end. They are turning the Kantian categorical imperative on its head – in that, instead of treating/treasuring every person as an end in itself, they are using them as a convenient “means” for their own self-enriching “end”. And to compound the travesty, they are using religion as a means to that end. I guess there is no greater profanity in religion than the profanity of "hiring god" to do your dirty work.

My heart goes out to the two Thams who are clearly victims of self-styled leaders in the likes of Kong Hee and his unwitting (and unfortunate) accomplices. She should know better of course. But when leaders swear to their besotted members that they are especially chosen by God to lead them and that divine confirmation is repeatedly endorsed by the curse of large numbers, even the most discerning at most times can be the most delusional (or misled).

The reality is this, the members feed on the claims of their leaders and the irony is that the more incredulous the claim, the more believable they become. Alas, the vicious cycle is self-reinforcing and the vortex of delusion is a bottomless pit for many victims of these self-serving leaders.

At this juncture, I apologize if my words are harsh, even judgmental. I stand judged too for my own failings. But I write what I wrote above despite my failings because they shouldn’t disqualify me – or else, no one is ever qualified. It should on the contrary urge me to stand up for what is right and to say it as it is. And in all this, to always remind myself of how I too can fall.

For if the emperor has no clothes, then it is not so much the emperor that is the issue. It is his public nakedness that has to be pointed out. Cheerz.

UNHAPPY EXPERIENCE WITH CATHAY PACIFIC, CX412 TO SEOUL DELAYED FOR 4 HOURS

A reader has sent us an email about his unhappy experience with a Cathay Pacific flight. According to him, his flight was supposed to have departed at 12.55AM today, but the flight ended up getting delayed until 4AM for unknown reasons. He says Cathay Pacific did not offer any other compensation other than a complimentary meal worth HKD75 (SGD10) in the airport food outlets, which was closed at that time. He says this standard of service is unacceptable for a major non-budget airline.

Read his account here.

Right now I am writing from Hong Kong International Airport.

Our flight CX412 from HKG to ICN on 06/12/2015 which was supposed to take off at 0055 hrs (GMT +8) has been delayed for 3 hours as of 0230 hrs for no apparent reason.

We have a connecting flight at Gimpo Airport in Seoul to Jeju at 1000 hrs. Travel insurance only covers flight delays for more than 5 hours.

Cathay Pacific has stated that if we flash our boarding pass,we can get a meal in the airport for HKD$75(approx SGD$10) However, all the food establishments in the terminal are closed now

Now I'm tired, hungry, and angry.CX has dampened my mood for what supposed to be a happy time. Nevermind that I didn't get the seat that I originally chose online, but now I have to fork out more money for my Seoul to Jeju flight which I'm very sure I will miss.

I wouldn't be mad if I booked Scoot and this happened,as I don't expect much from budget air. I don't care if budget air delay as you get what you pay for. I was onboard the Scoot flight that was delayed for very long to Sydney. But I expected it as I was flying budget air then.I paid $350 for that trip.I had no complaints as Budget air main service is to bring you from Point A to B

But now,I'm paying over $1000 for my air ticket on CX.I expect better. I only have myself to blame for not booking SQ.

LTA APOLOGIZES FOR DOWNTOWN LINE TAMIL TRANSLATION SCREW UP

Observant riders on the Downtown Line 2 which opened yesterday spotted a glaring mistake for one of the MRT station's Tamil translations: in an attempt to spell "Tan Kah Kee" station in Tamil script, the station name was mistakenly translated as "Paan Kah Kee".

This comes on the heels of previous Tamil translation gaffes made by government bodies and political parties. In 2014, iconic hawker center Lau Pa Sat was erroneously translated as "Lau Pa Sani (trans: Saturday or Satan)" in Tamil. Opposition parties SingFirst and the National Solidarity Party also suffered from poor Tamil translations that amounted to nothing more than gibberish in the recent general elections.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has since issued an apology for the incorrect Tamil translation on Saturday evening.

"We apologise for the error in the Tamil translation of Tan Kah Kee station and would be taking immediate action to have the station name replaced. This would be done before the stations open for passenger service on Dec 27, 2015."
