MY BOSS REFUSES TO PAY MY SALARY, MOM SAYS THEY CANNOT HELP

$

I have been working with Aspect Security Management Pte Ltd for the past 5 months as a relief guard. My boss name is Mr TAJUDIN. Even though I was a relief guard, I was required to work everyday from 7am to 7pm Monday to Sunday. Sometimes, I was even required to work night shift due to lack of manpower. Initially, I was given daily pay by the end of the day. Then, he changed the pay days where I was paid every 2- 3 days once. Now, I have not received my pay since the 4th of January. He owes me $910. Each time I callhim, he either does not answer my calls or keeps telling me that he will call me back. From what I have heard, none of his employees and relief guards have received their pay yet.

I called MOM to ask for their help but sadly, they just told me that since I am considered an independent contractor, they cannot help me in anyway. It is very sad to see that we independent contractors are not protected in any way.

Yesterday (14 Jan) I made a police report against the company. Today when I called him, he told me that he is still "looking" for money to pay us. Meanwhile, my bills are piling up and I do not even have money for food and have resorted to borrowing from others. I really do not know when I will get paid.

Please stay from this company: ASPECT SECURITY. There are many better security companies out there who will pay you properly and dont behave like a fraud.

AN OPEN LETTER TO ISIS FROM INDONESIANS

$
0
0

Muslims and non-Muslims in Indonesia will not be divided.

Today, Indonesians are mourning. Our people were taken away from us, and dozens of others were injured as a result of horrendous acts of terrorism in Jakarta that you claimed responsibility for. Several hours later, Indonesian authorities and the media reported that the attacks were perpetrated by Daesh, aka the “Islamic State.”

For us—the people who adhere to the same faith that you claim to belong to—the incident is painful. You have slandered our religion that does not propagate violence or murder against innocent individuals.

Do you realize that by committing such actions, you actually demean Islam itself? Have you ever thought what non-Muslims must think when they learn that an organization with the name “Islamic” is killing innocent people in such brutal and barbaric ways? Did you ever stop and think that the people whom you target may themselves be your brothers and sisters in Islam?

Do not forget that the country you attacked on January 14 has the largest number of Muslims in the world.

We do not understand exactly what you want. But if you aim to separate Indonesians into an “us” and “them,” it will never happen. We, the people of Indonesia, have implemented the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad to live side by side with those of other faiths. We understand the noble values of religion as an expression of affection, and we uplift these values in the form of humanitarianism. We share happiness, not fear. We promote peace and tolerance, not hate.

If you do not believe this, then come to Indonesia. Put down your gun. Pick up a pen. And watch and record our daily lives.

To our brothers and sisters in Daesh, we understand your anger over the wars in various parts of the world that are perpetrated by Western governments. But we also read in newspapers that you target Western nations.

Brothers and sisters, we need more concrete and savvy ways to promote peace. Whether you know this or not, Indonesia has made several efforts to help our oppressed brothers and sisters around the world. An Indonesian hospital in Gaza that was recently opened is one example. Although our government was initially reluctant to accept Rohingya refugees escaping persecution, we put pressure on Jakarta to act. We also have humanitarian aid workers who are struggling day and night in Syria, Palestine and Myanmar.

If that is not enough, please tell me how much more we should do rather than committing acts of terrorism in our country.

Today, you have murdered innocent people. The ones who did nothing wrong. The ones who perhaps did more sadaqa (charity) than you. The ones who may have stood at night for Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer) to bow down to the almighty. The ones who perhaps did good deeds that only God knows about.

You have taken the lives of people we care about. It is very painful. But we will move past this. Why? Because we cling to brotherhood and kinship, not revenge and violence.

What have you done in Jakarta will not divide Indonesians. Our non-Muslim community will embrace and love us and we will embrace and love them. Our mosques, churches and temples will continue to be places of peace and tolerance. We are not afraid. We will stick together and keep struggling to create a better world.

We have no idea what you plan next for our country. But if you read this letter, we pray that you may be given guidance from God.

Regards
The people of Indonesia

IF WE KEEP IMPORTING FOREIGNERS, S'PORE MAY END UP LIKE EUROPE?

As you all know, the Syrian war has generated a lot of refugees, all of whom are headed to Europe, along with tons of Africans and other nationalities

Strangely, majority of them are men. Strong, able-bodied men who, instead of staying and fighting for their country, are abandoning it to escape to Europe. See link below.

http://data.unhcr.org/mediterranean/regional.php.

And what do they do in their host nations that have generously taken them in?

RAPE. Among other crimes.

Perhaps the most famous of them was the New Year's Mass Sexual Assault in Cologne, Germany where up to 1000 perpetrators were involved, out of which 22 were identified as migrants

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35231046

Why am I writing this? Simple. To open your eyes to what happens when a nation falls to leftist influences and starts importing 3rd world people in without doing ANY kind of back ground checks what so ever. Where the police are prevented from doing their jobs and in many cases, told to cover up migrant crimes, along with the leftist media.

Q : But what you're doing is racist!
A : What I'm doing is telling the truth. Supported by video and news evidence.

Q : Why do you care?
A : Because if it can happen in Europe, it can happen anywhere, even Singapore

Q : But the people in their own countries commit crimes too!
A : Not to this extent. Look at it this way : If you have someone with AIDs living in your house, would you bring in a total stranger with Ebola? Why make things worse?

SPCA ADOPTION CAMPAIGN: HOW MUCH IS THAT DOGGIE IN THE SHELTER?

$

Dear good people of All Singapore Stuff,

I hope this email finds you well. I have a project for The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), that I’d like to share with you.

As you know, for many years people have grown up singing “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?”. It’s a song most people know.

What most people don’t know, however, is that in 2009, before the singer of the song Patti Page died, she re-recorded another version of the song with different lyrics, entitled “Do You See That Doggie in the Shelter?”.

Patti Page wanted her famous tune to be no longer about pet stores, many of which get their pets from unethical and cruel puppy mills, but for animal shelters and homeless animals instead. Unfortunately, her new version of the song remains largely unknown.

But this could be all about to change. Because SPCA Singapore is determined to spread and share this new version of the song with everyone, everywhere. And to do that, we have spent a year producing a children’s picture book, and an animated sing-along music video.

Watch video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa4quLuIfl4

View book here:
http://www.vernniechong.com/do-you-see-the-doggie-in-the-shelter/

Together, we have also come to agreement with Singapore’s National Library Board to place our books in libraries island-wide. These books have also been given to schools worldwide.

As for the video, not only has it been released online, it has also been playing on outdoor digital media all across Singapore, and was screened via Animal Planet’s and Discovery Kids' Asia-Pacific network over the month of October.

Unfortunately, we have not made quite as much progress on social media. And that is where most of today’s kids are – folks who could well be thinking of getting a pet this year. That is why, we hope that you can share our project on your website and social media.

With your help, we can help fulfill the late Patti Page’s dream. And go one step closer to a world where kids sing this song, and choose adoption over buying.

CHEE SOON JUAN: AUTHORITARIAN RULE & THE IMPENDING CRISIS IN S'PORE

$
0
0

"We have learned that any solution to our problems require much more that the piecemeal measures attempted in the past. It demands nothing less than a fundamental change in our approach to the idea of development, a paradigm shift toward the parallel pursuit of democracy and a market economy."

So said the late Kim Dae Jung, South Korea's former president. When the country was undergoing its economic throes in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Kim knew that South Korea needed radical changes in order to resuscitate the economy. South Korea was emerging from a long period of dictatorships and a command economy dominated by the the political elite and chaebols (conglomerates owned by wealthy families).

When Kim was elected president in 1998, he ditched authoritarian rule and took the country on a sharp turn towards democracy. The result? South Korea's economy bounced back with a vengeance. Today, corporations like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, SsangYong, Kumho, etc. compete on the international stage with the world's leading brands.

And it's not just gadgets and cars that South Korea is exporting, the country's pop culture have found its way into the hearts of people far and wide. Korean television dramas are popular not just in Asia but places as far away as Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The musical genre of K-pop has become a mainstay in the teen subculture all over the world with the Korean boy band, BigBang, even becoming the "gods of pop" in Indonesia. In 2012, Korean musician Psy took the globe by storm with this Oppa Gangnam Style dance video.

Somewhere in here is a lesson for us in Singapore. When I met Kim before he became president, he had repeated to me that it was unfortunate that much of Asia was still under undemocratic rule which stymied the development of our societies.

It is a view I share deeply. Innovation does not take place in the halls of government buildings and it cannot be kindled from ministerial pronouncements. Innovation thrives in a culture that not just tolerates but celebrates openness, diversity and, yes, dissent; it flourishes in an environment where people have free and full access to information.

Financial analyst Michael Schuman expressed this point perfectly, writing in Time magazine in 2010: "Fear caused by political control doesn't foster an atmosphere conducive to free thinking. Censorship and limitations on information curtail the knowledge and debate necessary for the generation of new ideas. I'm not the only one who believes this is true. Some Koreans...argue that the country couldn't have become more innovative without democracy." It is no accident that freedom of expression and innovation are so commonly juxtaposed in the entrepreneurial world.

But even before the 1997 meltdown, economist and Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman had pointed out that Singapore's top-down, input-driven growth model was unsustainable: "One can immediately conclude that Singapore is unlikely to achieve future growth rates comparable to the past." This is because, Krugman explained, "Singapore's growth can be explained by increases in measure inputs. There is no sign at all of increased efficiency."

But instead of liberalising our society and encouraging the hard work of innovation like the Koreans did following the financial crisis in 1997, the PAP took the easy way out by transforming our city into a tax haven and attracting the super rich of the world. Instead of making policy adjustments to retain our local talent and investing in our people, our rulers found it expedient to bring in foreigners by the millions.

Of course, these measures generated GDP growth but it was growth that masked deeper structural problems of our economy. For one thing, labour productivity levels remained dismal even as GDP expanded. The problem persists to this day with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong lamenting that we have "maxed out" on easy ways of achieving economic growth - a tacit admission that Paul Krugman was right.

"Productivity is very tough to do," Lee acknowledges. Indeed it is. Analysts observe that it is harder now to retool Singapore's economy. The PAP has done everything - or almost everything - to kickstart the productivity engine. In 1991, it came up with the National Technology Plan to propel Singapore into the "major league of a world-class innovation-driven economy by 1995." Five years later, it launched the SME21 plan to "promote SMEs is to help them tap into global networks." This was followed by a 2001 report from Economic Review Committee (ERC) which promised to "make Singapore a knowledge economy powered by innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship." Nine years later, another committee, the Economic Strategies Committee (ESC), was formed to "make skills, innovation and productivity the basis for economic growth." Now in 2016, the government has reincarnated the ERC and ESC in the form of the Committee on the Future Economy, or CFE, to (predictably) "recommend strategies to enable companies and industry clusters to develop innovative capacities."

In between, there were a myriad of schemes - costing taxpayers more that $20 billion - to boost productivity. They included promoting R&D, enhancing of public-private sector collaboration, upgrading workers' skills and capabilities, increasing foreign-worker levies, subsidising businesses in purchasing IT equipment, and so on. Bodies like the National Productivity Board, SPRING Singapore and, more recently, the National Productivity and Continuing Education Council were established to lead the productivity chase.

And yet, for nearly two decades, productivity gains continue to elude us, and we have produced few innovative enterprises that are able to compete internationally. Such a scenario does not paint a bright future of our economy. In fact, Nomura's Global Markets Research predicts that the failed productivity drive will be a drag on economic growth until the end of this decade.

We have tried everything except the one that is key: Freeing our society from authoritarian rule. It is clear that the anachronistic paradigm of undemocratic, one-party dominance - where debate, a free media, and a fair election system are non-existent - is the proverbial albatross around Singapore's neck.

And because we have taken the easy way out all these years, we are ill-prepared to weather the global economic storm that is about to descend upon us. There is gloom in our housing market, our dollar continues to weaken even as we spent $40 billion of our reserves trying to prop it up, our oil-rig builders Kepple and Sembcorp Marine are under severe strain from cancelled projects; our flagship shipping company Neptune Orient Lines collapsed under unsustainable losses and was sold off; household debt of Singaporeans soared to become one of the highest in the world and, perhaps most frighteningly, China's economy seems on track to becoming the epicenter of the next global economic meltdown - an economy of which we are the biggest foreign investor.

Assuredly, we will not be able to avoid the upheaval. The question is, when we emerge from it, will we divest ourselves of the many excuses we have put up to defer from opening up our political system, or will we continue down the dead-end alley of authoritarian rule?

WOULD YOU PAY $6 FOR THIS PLATE OF MALAY RICE @ BUGIS JUNCTION?

Salam Farhan,

I bought this Malay rice with dishes at Bugis Junction Food Court which costs me a whopping $6 just for a vegetable, potato and a "bulls eye" egg.

Is this reasonable? Moreover, the stall is not even halal and the 2 foreign bosses are pretending it is and passing off as that.

This post is not only to alert all Muslims of such unethical practice but also to open the public eyes to massive profiteering by CapitalMall and HDB. Entrepreneurship is non existent in Singapore and is only reserved for foreigners in conjunction with our government to rip us off!

May Allah show those Muslims especially "MUIS" the errors of their vote on Sept 11 last year which will lead to unintended consequences for our next generation.

STOP GOVERNMENT & OIL COMPANIES FROM PROFITING AT S'POREANS EXPENSE!

$

The current oil price might drop to $10 a barrel. It's time for the Singapore government to lower household electric tariff, gas and petrol cost?

While in US, the price of petrol and gas have been falling tremendously. As such, US citizens are paying much lower than before for petrol, gas and fuel cost. Surprisingly, major petroleum companies and Singapore Power have not lower the price and continue to make huge profits from consumers.

If US can do it, why not Singapore?

We must put pressure on oil companies and the government to stop overcharging Singaporeans. Write to your MPs, ask them hard questions at the Meet-the-People sessions, make yourselves heard on Facebook, share this message around.

Singaporeans are not and will not be pushed around.

SINCE PAP SAYS "NO ONE OWES US A LIVING", WE DON'T OWE FOREIGNERS A LIVING TOO

$

I refer to the article “S’pore’s Minister Chan Chun Sing’s first blog post – “No one owes us a living” (Yahoo News, Jan 15).

It states that “The current economic outlook is particularly challenging. Many are worried if there will be enough orders for the companies and jobs for workers in the coming months.”

“No one owes us a living.”

In the context of “no one owes us a living” – we may need to review the following policies:-

… allowing foreigners who come as tourists to look for jobs

… no CPF contributions for foreign workers may make them cheaper than citizens

… consider using some of the billions collected from foreign workers’ levies to help affected citizens

… consider requiring employers to explain and show documentation as to why they were still unable to employ citizens, under the national jobs bank

… the “no limit” in the hiring of employment pass workers in a company

DECAPITATED COCKROACH FOUND IN LETTUCE FROM GIANT @ TAMPINES!

Please be careful when buying '"fresh" vegetables from Giant supermarket! The other day, my father bought lettuce for me from their Tampines megastore outlet. While I was happily preparing my salad and peeling the layers of leaf off, a dead cockroach's body fell out from inside the lettuce. After another layer, it's head then fell out. It was a disgustingly horrifying situation and my dog was trying to lick/eat the dead cockroach. In the end I could not make my salad as that was the only lettuce head I had bought.

I emailed Giant and even sent them pictures which I will attach below. There was an automatic email reply that stated they would get back to me within 3 working days. I have waited way more than that and yet they have simply ignored my email instead of properly acknowledging the issue. I am thoroughly disappointed with their service and how they handled the situation.

So, be wary when buying vegetables from Giant. There might be a free gift waiting to surprise you. And Giant won't be bothered, anyway.

Uber and GrabCar are too much! They are now picking up passengers from Changi Airport and reducing the income of all taxi uncles out there! I even spot one Malaysian Uber car queuing up and picking up passengers from Changi Airport taxi stand!

Why does Khaw Boon Wan allow all this illegal cars to operate? Our taxi uncles income getting less and less already but still no news from him! If they want to protect the image of Singapore, why allow foreign driver to pick up airport passengers?

SINGAPORE WOMAN FEELS THAT PEOPLE ARE JUDGING HER AND HER ANGMO HUSBAND

$

Dear A.S.S,

I am a Singaporean woman married to a Caucasian white male. We have been married for 15 years and we are the parents of 2 wonderful girls.

Often, when I am shopping in town with my husband, I get looks of disapproval. People give us condescending looks. It feels like they think that I am some working girl whom this white guy just randomly picked off the street. Those dirty looks will only go away when we are joined by our daughters. People then avert their gaze without even looking apologetic.

I don't wear a lot of bling. I suppose a wedding ring alone is not suffice. Even my daughters have caught people giving us those unkind looks. I don't think they should be subjected to these unspoken yet in your face judgements.

It is the 2016. Mixed marriages are nothing new. Stop being so judgemental!

MINDEF FORCED REJECTED JOB APPLICANT TO ATTEND NS MEDICAL REVIEW

$

Mindef shamelessly cheated poor rejected job applicant into attending non-mandatory medical review just for their administrative closure on job application

This relate to an earlier article i submitted: http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/i-waited-4-months-mindef-job-on...

After I was rejected for the job position recently which I have waited for 4months of my precious time, I have already formally inform the Mindef staff by the name C***y S** that I won't be interested to attend the upcoming medical review at MCC CMPB since I was already rejected for the job. Instead on 11 Jan 2016, she still insist me on attending the Medical Review and said it is mandatory for the NS Liability. End up I still turn up for this particular medical review and did not reprimand this of C***y S** for attending and only to realise that this medical review was solely for the purpose of job application purpose and NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY NS LIABILITY. At there, there was another MCC DXO staff by the name of Y*q**n whom attended to me to explain that Session was just a meet up to conclude on the failed job application which basically I just listen and forget. At that point I still wasn't sure about what happen until 1 day later, suddenly one NSF from NSPC called asking me to attend medical review again. I told this guy I have already attended the NS Liability medical review on 14 Jan 2016 so there is no need for him to make any arrangement. It was only then I realised that i was practically cheated into attending a medical review for the failed job application. Does anyone heard of any job applicant still being called up for Medical Review AFTER BEING REJECTED for the job? I think this is possibly the first in the history that an organisation can be so shameless to the maximum.

Don't the Mindef think they are too much by cheating rejected job applicant to attend non-mandatory medical review? Since I am not oblige to attend this medical review for the failed job application, why didn't they come clean but instead cheated me into attending this redundant meet up. In total, I have already wasted my precious 4months inclusive of 6 meet up session(interview, unit preview, medical screening, Security Clearance x 2 and this non-mandatory medical review) with these immoral, shameless and despicable people. I still have all the concrete evidence of all voice conversations exchange with ALL the above mentioned. So, if they want to challenge against any of my allegation, feel free to find me. I will be waiting.

STREET DOGS ARE NOT THRASH JUST BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE AN OWNER!

$

<Reader Contribution>

We are taking the step of posting this matter on FB as our last resort after waiting for the police to take action for more than a month. To date, no updates have been given and will be given according to them. We spoke with SPCA and understood that they do not have the right to prosecute but has advised us to at least get the police to issue a warning letter to the driver for careless driving like another similar case which took place in May 2015 whereby a stray dog was also knocked down and killed (Ref: TP/IP/22843/2015(136410/SR). However, the investigation officer (IO) of our case has informed us that she will not even do that.

Since no legal action can be taken against him, we can only hope that through Facebook more people will recognise this guy and when he knows that he is being watched, he will think twice to kill another dog and no longer capable of being a threat to the safety of our homeless dogs. Please share this with any dog feeders and lovers you know of.

On 27 November at 6.50pm, one of our feeders saw a lorry intentionally accelerating toward the direction of a small puppy that was walking on the side of an industrial street. When the lorry sped past the pup, it yelped in pain. Rushing over, we found the pup limping and took it to the vet. The feeder took a photo of this lorry for record purpose hoping that it was just an one-off incident. This lorry comes daily to this same street to pick workers up from the dormitory. We usually spot him between 630pm and 930pm. However, we do not know where the actual work site of these workers is and where he ferries them to but we believe that it should be another industrial or construction place whereby stray dogs are also present. The name of the company is Willy Design & Engineering Pte Ltd..

On 4 December 2015 at 8.05 pm. along the same industrial street, a young dog was also standing on the side of the road with its back facing the direction of oncoming traffic. Two trucks slowed down and steered their vehicle away from the dog to avoid hitting it as they saw that the dog did not see them coming. However this same lorry driver stayed on the colliding path with the dog. As his lorry drew nearer, the driver did not slow down or attempt to steer away. One of the feeders waved at him to signal him to move away from the dog. But to our shock we heard the sound of the engine being accelerated toward the dog instead. He immediately knocked the dog down but yet did not stop at that. His lorry ran right over the poor dog from the front wheels to the back wheels. Think for a moment … if a lorry was driving within the speed limit of a 1 lane street it would have been able to stop immediately after hitting the dog at the front of his lorry. However in this case, the lorry only came to a halt after 10 meters from where the dog was. .

We ran toward the dog as it laid there motionless. It was in shock and vomiting blood out of its mouth. The driver sat inside the lorry without rendering aid. The workers who were ferried on the back of the lorry also continued to remain on the lorry. They were unmoved by what had happened and was not surprised at all. They stared at us with an emotionless look that says "what is the big deal?"

The dog was rushed to emergency vet at Mt Pleasant Whitley but was already dead by the time we arrived. The vet's examination says the dog died of internal injuries. We took a death certificate from the vet and proceeded to call SPCA. They advised us to make a police report.

We spent the next one hour at the police station watching the poor police officer making countless calls and being pushed from one supervisor to another over the phone whether or not to classify this case as a NP299 or NP168. In the end he finally got one supervisor who was willing to let him register the case under NP299. However the case was later pushed to the Traffic Police under NP168.

We decided to get the other feeder who witnessed the earlier incident on the 27th of November to make a police report too. We explained that the action of this man rendered him a daily threat to any street dogs and hope that they can expedite on the investigation.

So there were 2 reports made about the same driver with 2 eyewitnesses.

However these are the responses from the different investigation officers we spoke to from the police department:
1) The dog is a stray dog (not a owned dog) so no action can be taken.
2) We cannot prove that he is speeding and intentionally run over the dog unless you have video proof..
3) They will not regard both cases as linked because 1 case is classified under Traffic Police and the other is not. So it will be handled by different officer and thus not be brought together as related even though it is about the same vehicle and driver.
4) The police may or may not speak to the driver and it will take many months to close this case as there are many other cases for them to work on.
5) We will not be told of the outcome of the investigation because we are not the direct victims of the incident.

WHY IS WP NOT ALLOWED TO FILL NCMP SEAT WITH THEIR CHOICE CANDIDATE?

$

Dear Editor,

Greetings to you and all fellow Singaporeans, I hope all is well with you and your families.

Last Friday marked the new chapter of our nation's 51st anniversary with the opening of the 13th Parliamentary session. Notably absent was the presence of 1 more NCMP which the PAP dominated parliament has blatantly refused to fill, going by the non-binding opinion of the AGC which the High Court has earlier ruled does not represent any interpretation of our laws!

In any case, lets hear what our Constitution has to say about Ms Lee Li Lian not wanting to take up the NCMP seat: "Subject to subsection (3), if any non-constituency Member declared to be elected under section 52 fails to take and subscribe before Parliament the Oath of Allegiance under Article 61 of the Constitution at the first or second sitting of Parliament during its first session after the general election, Parliament may by resolution declare that his seat has become vacant and that it be filled by the next succeeding candidate at the general election in the order of priority as determined in accordance with section 52(2) from among those candidates who are eligible to be elected as non-constituency Members and have not been so elected." - Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap 218 Sect 53 Clearly, the PAP's parliament has an obligation to offer each and every successive losing candidate, the NCMP seat except for those who polled less than 15%!

I find it amusing for our puppet president to be reading from the script prepared by his former party, things which the PAP does not believe, that is: Diversity of opinions and voices! It is clearly a leopard which does not change its spots right after its massive mandate similar to 2001. It "reinstated" a bloated cabinet under the guise of "renewal", continued harassing the town of residents who did not support its candidates and lastly, the unlawful prevention of the next "duly elected" NCMP from taking up his seat.

If the PAP chooses to take the easy way out and slide down the slippery slope of oppression and fascist capitalism, its only a matter of time before the people will punish it even more than we did in 2011. This time round, we simply did what the WP does sometimes in parliament, to offer kind gestures of support if the PAP is heading in the right direction but will not hesitate to censure it terribly if it does not wish to heed the people's voices from now onward. Dr Jillian Koh has already cautioned that the electorate has pointed out the imbalances of our political system and it will become clearer in this instance, the true colors of the PAP if it does not allow Prof Daniel Goh to take his rightful place in their kangaroo Parliament.

Happy Lunar New Year,
Dan Dan

A representative from the Singapore Zoo responds to this article: http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/spore-zoo-ignores-viewers-compl...

All animals under human care in Wildlife Reserves Singapore’s parks, including Singapore Zoo, are afforded the utmost care and their welfare is paramount in our organisational ethos.

Working with animals at the Singapore Zoo is a unique calling for a carefully selected group of staff. It is a mission that our colleagues cherish, and they will always try their best to take care of the animals in their charge.

We are aware of the previous complaint against the trainer mentioned in the article, and have carefully reviewed the incident. While it may have appeared that the trainer used a harsh method when handling Boy, our 2 year-old golden retriever, rest assured Boy was not harmed in any way.

We appreciate the concern for our dogs, and assure animal lovers that we will continue to provide the best possible care for the animals in our charge. We would also like to reaffirm that high animal welfare standards continue to be exercised in Singapore Zoo.

WRS’ policy and guidelines on animal welfare and ethics can be accessed at http://www.wrs.com.sg/policies-welfare.html

Best regards

PAP SHOULD BEND TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, GIVE WP THE NCMP SEAT

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

Former MP for Punggol East, Ms Lee Li Lian, had lost her seat in last year's general elections to the PAP challenger Mr Charles Chong. As she had lost by the closest margin among opposition candidates, she was declared elected as a Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) by the Returning Officer.

However, Ms Lee Li Lian had informed the media that she would reject the NCMP seat shortly after losing. She said that she did not want to be a NCMP because the NCMP role is best suited for the new opposition candidates who has much to benefit from the parliamentary experience, and does not suit a losing incumbent MP. She added that her party has good candidates who can contribute in parliament.

She also said that she had resigned from her job after becoming MP for Punggol East in 2013, so that she could serve her residents better. "However, unlike for an MP, it is not possible to be a full-time NCMP," she had said.

Subsequently, the WP's leadership unanimously supported her choice and nominated NUS sociologist, Associate Professor Daniel Goh to be her replacement as NCMP. He was among the candidates in the WP's East Coast team that lost with 39.3% of the votes - the third best losing percentage for the opposition.

Another member of the East Coast team, consultancy firm chief executive Leon Perera, had already been sworn in as NCMP, along with fellow WP candidate and lawyer Dennis Tan, who garnered 42.5 per cent of votes in Fengshan SMC.

Leader of the House Grace Fu on Sunday said that the Workers' Party will have to move a motion in Parliament on their own, if they want to propose an alternative candidate for the vacant Non-Constituency MP seat.

Minister Fu also slammed WP's Lee Li Lian for vacating the seat. "Like many of her constituents, I learnt first from the media and later from her absence from the opening of the Parliament that she is not intending to assume the NCMP seat, despite having campaigned hard to persuade voters to elect her to a seat in the Parliament." Ms Fu also added that the 15,801 residents of Punggol East who had voted for their former MP Ms Lee "would want to understand the basis of her decision".

Parliament resumes next week with the debate on the President's Address.

FROM ELECTED PRESIDENT TO APPOINTED PRESIDENT?

President to be appointed by Parliament?

I refer to the article “Let’s talk about policy failures and the elected presidency” (Straits Times, Jan 18).

It states that “While we worried about a rogue government in the past, we did not consider the possibility that a rogue president could be elected.

It is true that our elected presidency does not allow the president to open the coffers with his single key. Yet, the election of a figure who is opposed to the responsible government in power can create painful political tensions.

We can go back to the old practice of having the Parliament elect the president.”

Democracy “backwards”?

This may be a huge step backwards for democracy in Singapore.

Such a change should be decided by a referendum of the people, instead of simply an act in Parliament.

Also, the timing now may be seen as controversial, given that the last presidential election was won by a hair’s breath.

We want an “elected President”?

I believe Singaporeans still want an elected President who will “voice out”.

Let’s look at history for some examples.

Reserves used more than 27 times, but nobody knows?

For example, “President Nathan revealed just before he left the presidency (August, 2011), that the past reserves have been used more than 27 times since 2002, for projects like land reclamation and the Selective En-bloc Redevelopment Scheme (Sers)”. (“President guards Reserves: Really?“, Aug 24, 2011; “How much of the Reserves has been really used?“, Aug 10, 2011)

Reserves actually used 55 times?

Subsequently, if not for NCMP Mrs LinaChiam’s question in Parliament in July 2013 – no one would have known that the Reserves had actually been used 55 times, instead of the 27 times disclosed by our former President.

Govt’s assets – 56 man-years to get information?

Another example is when the late President OngTengCheong asked how much assets the Government had – he never got an answer because he was told that it would take 56 man-years to obtain the information for him.

I  re-publish former President OngTengCheong’s interview with AsiaWeek (10 March 2000) where he revealed the obstacles he faced when he asked for the copies of the government’s accounts on the reserves and investments.
President Ong Teng Cheong’s political career spanned 21 years. He was Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, before he resigned to become Elected President in 1993. And it was as Communications Minister that Ong pushed for the development of the MRT system, the largest construction project in Singapore’s history. His next challenge came on the labour front, when he became NTUC Secretary-General in 1983. Ong was diagnosed with lymphoma-cancer of the lymphatic system in 1992. But this did not dampen his desire to continue serving. He became Singapore’s first Elected President a year later, and it was a presidency marked by many charitable projects, which touched the lives of many Singaporeans. Ong stepped down as President at the age of 63.

“Strike” without telling cabinet?

As chairman of the People’s Action Party (PAP) and secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress, Ong was considered a firm Lee Kuan Yew loyalist. In January 1986, he sanctioned a strike in the shipping industry, the first for about a decade in Singapore, without telling the cabinet. He said that he did not inform the cabinet or the government because they would probably stop him from going ahead with the strike. There was a major corporate and Cabinet backlash against his decision; however, the strike lasted only two days, and a deal was struck. He was also a former Minister of National Development.”

IS IT TRUE THAT WORKING AS AN ENGINEER GOT NO FUTURE IN SINGAPORE?

$

<Reader Contribution>

I can't speak for 18, 19 years old young people today, but let me offer my perspective as someone who studied engineering in Singapore.

I studied Electrical Engineering in National University of Singapore and graduated in 2007. Most of the people I know from my engineering course are either not working in engineering/technology field (many have moved to banking/finance/real estate) or have moved to project/product management. Very few people are still doing coding/engineering work.

If you are an engineer, you will find that your renumeration will lag behind peers who are in other professions, especially in legal and finance. This gap will grow to be significant within a few years' time. Many people who are not interested in other so-called 'prestigious' professions will try to take up project management, because as a senior engineer, your salary will stagnant fairly early on. Many older engineers also face discrimination as there is no legal protection against ageism in the Singapore workplace.

Very few people can see a future being an engineer throughout their professional career.

It is also true that Singapore does not have the culture that respect engineers and the work they do. Singapore has the culture that prizes management over workers, and people who do the actual work are seen as dispensable and replaceable.

This is of course not great for Singapore, if it wants to drive innovation. But I can't see this changing anytime soon.

TAXI DRIVERS CHARGE FIXED FARE FROM ORCHARD TOWERS TO CBD AREA

Taxi drivers and car drivers have been spotted loitering outside Orchard Towers touting their services for a ride to the CBD area for a fixed fare. Yup, fixed fare. They don't go by meter.

The cost? A whopping $35, that's double the cost of how a typical ride would cost. This has since sparked an outrage amongst honest taxi-drivers.

These drivers typically target foreigners. The authorities have tried to stop them but to no avail.

If found guilty, the driver will receive 12 demerit points and a fine of $500.

IS THE SWEARING IN CEREMONY A JOKING MATTER TO THESE TWO MPS?

$

Dear editor,

I want to bring your attention to this photo published in the newspapers on Jan 16. This photo shows the swearing in ceremony for members of parliament of the 13th parliament of Singapore. It is the most powerful political body in the country and definitely a very solemn occasion.

It is thus to my great disgust and anger that I spotted these two persons making a mockery of the whole ceremony. The lady circled is Cheng Li Hui, an MP for Tampines GRC, and the Malay man is Saktiandi Supaat, an MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.

These two were smiling and playing a fool during the ceremony, making eyes at one another as if the ceremony is some childish game. They are being sworn into parliament, not attending some school assembly, but they chose to take things lightly. Is it because they do not care for the responsibilities of parliament and are simply happy that they will be getting big fat MP allowances after riding into parliament on the coattails of the GRC system?

Compare this to the Workers' Party's Chen Show Mao and Pritam Singh, who know how to take their duties in parliament seriously and behave appropriately.

If the PAP wants to convince the people that they are the best and most disciplined leaders for Singapore, they should conduct a proper investigation into this case of misconduct. PAP MPs or not, they need to be taught that our most solemn ceremonies are not joking matters.
